What is an AI CFO agent, and what isn’t it?
A plain explanation for founders: what a CFO does, which part of that an AI agent can take on, why the numbers must never come from AI, and what stays with you and your CA.
An AI CFO agent does the reading a chief financial officer does, on its own: it goes through your books on a schedule, works out cash, burn and runway, runs the checks a CFO would run, and tells you what needs you and why. The figures should be calculated from your entries, never generated by AI. Decisions stay with you, filing with your CA.
What a CFO does
In a growing company, the chief financial officer keeps watch on the money so the founder doesn’t have to. Most of that work is reading:
- Cash: how much there is, how fast it’s going, and when it runs out.
- Collections: who owes what, who is paying slower, and who to chase.
- Costs: what is growing faster than the business, and what is paid twice.
- Compliance: GST, TDS, PF and advance tax, paid on time.
- Reporting: the monthly numbers for the team, the board and investors.
- Decisions: whether you can hire, when to raise, what to cut.
Most early companies can’t justify a full-time CFO, so this reading happens late, at month end, or not at all.
What an AI CFO agent is
An AI CFO agent does the reading part of that job on its own. It goes through your books on a schedule, works out cash, burn and runway, runs the checks a CFO would run, and tells you what needs you, why, and what to do about it.
The word that matters is agent: it doesn’t wait to be asked. Each night it reads, compares with the night before, and comes to you with what changed.
Agent, dashboard or chatbot
| Works when | Gives you | |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard | You open it | Charts you have to read and judge yourself |
| Chatbot | You ask it | Answers, which a language model may word, and sometimes number, wrongly |
| AI CFO agent | On its own, every night | What changed, why, and what to do, with each figure worked out from your books |
The number problem
Language models are good with words and unreliable with arithmetic: asked for a total, they can produce a figure that looks right and isn’t. In finance, one wrong number is enough to lose trust in all of them.
So a trustworthy AI CFO keeps the two jobs apart. The numbers are calculated from your entries by fixed rules, the same way every time. Words come after, around numbers that already exist. In Cassence, no AI model reads your books at all.
What stays with people
- Decisions. The agent shows what each option would do; you choose.
- Filing and sign-off. Your chartered accountant files your returns and signs your accounts.
- Relationships. Investors, lenders and customers deal with you. The agent drafts the update and the reminder; you send them.
Eight questions to ask any AI CFO
Before you hand over your books, ask these. Open each to see what a good answer sounds like, and Cassence’s.
Where do the numbers come from?
A good answer
Added up from your own entries by fixed rules, so the same books always give the same answer.
Cassence’s answer
Every figure is calculated from your entries. No AI model reads your books or writes a number.
Can it change my books or move money?
A good answer
No. Read-only access, so it can’t edit an entry or make a payment.
Cassence’s answer
Read-only, always: it never writes to your books, never edits an entry, never moves money.
What does it rest the cash figure on?
A good answer
A bank balance someone checked, with its date, not the books’ own balance.
Cassence’s answer
A balance a person confirmed against a statement. When it’s over 14 days old, a check says so.
Does it know Indian tax?
A good answer
GST, TDS, PF, ESI and advance tax dates, with the amounts your books show, and QRMP by state.
Cassence’s answer
Its checks are written for Indian rules, and the calendar carries each date with its amount.
Does it work with how I keep books today?
A good answer
Your sheets, your bank statements and your accounting software, without moving to new software.
Cassence’s answer
Excel and Google Sheets, statements from any bank, Tally, Zoho Books, and payment, store and payroll apps.
Will it tell me, or do I have to look?
A good answer
It reads on its own and tells you what changed, without you opening a dashboard.
Cassence’s answer
It reads every night and tells you on the bell and by email: new problems, cleared ones, runway falling, late customers.
Where is my data kept, and who can see it?
A good answer
In a named place, encrypted, seen only by people you add, and deleted when you ask.
Cassence’s answer
Stored in Mumbai, each company under its own key (AES-256-GCM), seen by the people you add, deleted in one step.
What stays with my CA?
A good answer
Filing and sign-off. A good tool helps your CA rather than replacing them.
Cassence’s answer
Filing and sign-off stay with your CA, who can sign in with the Accountant role and see the same screen.
Who it’s for
Founders of startups and growing companies who keep books (in Tally, Zoho Books, a spreadsheet or bank statements) but don’t have someone reading them every week. And the chartered accountants who look after them, who can see the same picture for each client.
How Cassence does it

What is an AI CFO?
An AI CFO does the reading a chief financial officer does. It goes through your books on a schedule, works out cash, burn and runway, and tells you what needs you, why, and what to do about it.
Can an AI CFO replace a human CFO?
It can take on the reading: watching cash, checking costs and collections, keeping tax dates, drafting reports. Decisions, negotiations and judgement stay with people, and filing and sign-off stay with your chartered accountant.
Is it safe to give an AI agent my books?
Ask for read-only access, encryption, a named place where data is kept, and deletion when you ask. Cassence is read-only, encrypts each company with its own key, stores data in Mumbai, and deletes a company in one step.
Does an AI CFO make up numbers?
It shouldn’t. Ask how figures are produced. In Cassence every figure is added up from your entries by fixed rules, and no AI model reads your books.
Do I need accounting software to use one?
Not for Cassence. It reads Excel and Google Sheets and bank statements on their own, as well as Tally and Zoho Books.
